Fabric weights

We list fabric by weight in ounces per square yard. For reference:

  • 7 oz jersey: a standard tee weight. The ringer tee and flannel sit here.
  • 8.5 oz jersey: our heavyweight tee. Opaque, holds its shape, slightly stiff until the third wash.
  • 10 oz French terry: the crewneck. Loops on the inside, lighter than fleece.
  • 14 oz fleece: the hoodie, sweatpant and sweat shorts. Brushed on the inside, about twice the weight of a mall hoodie.
  • 12 oz duck: the chore coat and double knee pant. Dense plain weave, breaks in over a month.
  • 14.5 oz selvedge denim: unsanforized, so it shrinks on the first soak.
  • 20 to 24 oz melton: the overshirt and varsity. Felted wool, wind resistant, no lining needed.

How we size

All measurements on product pages are for a size medium, laid flat. Chest is measured 1 inch below the armhole, pit to pit. Length is from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem. Sleeve is from the shoulder seam to the cuff.

| Size | Chest (in) | Body length (in) | Waist (in) | |——|———–|——————|———–| | XS | 19.5 | 26 | 27 to 29 | | S | 20.5 | 27 | 29 to 31 | | M | 21.5 | 28 | 31 to 34 | | L | 23 | 29 | 34 to 37 | | XL | 24.5 | 30 | 37 to 40 | | XXL | 26 | 31 | 40 to 43 |

These are the base numbers for the tee. Fleece and outerwear run 1 to 2 inches wider in the chest at every size; the exact number is on each product page. Pants are sold by waist in inches and ship with a long inseam so you can hem.

Washing

  • Cotton jersey, fleece and terry: machine wash cold inside out, tumble dry low. Everything is pre-washed or garment dyed, so further shrinkage is under 2 percent.
  • Duck and twill: machine wash cold inside out, tumble dry low. Expect creasing at the knees and pockets.
  • Raw denim: soak in cold water for 30 minutes before the first wear, hang dry. Then wash cold inside out as rarely as you can.
  • Wool knits and scarves: hand wash cold with wool soap, press out water in a towel, lay flat to dry.
  • Melton wool and waxed cotton: do not machine wash. Brush, spot clean with a damp cloth. Rewax the coach jacket once a year.
  • Leather: wipe with a damp cloth, condition twice a year with a neutral leather cream, store on a wide hanger away from radiators.
  • Nylon: machine wash cold in a mesh bag, hang dry.

Hardware

Snaps and slide buckles are solid brass and will darken with wear. Zippers are YKK. Buttons on wovens are corozo, a nut that can be sewn back on with ordinary thread if one ever comes loose.
